Backpack/Bushcraft

Colorado Camp Clinic

Backpack/Bushcraft

3 - 10 Night

Q: What's the difference between the skills of survival and the skills of bushcraft?

A: The skills in both are essentially the same. You have to be able to procure
shelter, fire, water, and food, in that order... Usually.

Bush-craft takes the basic skills to a whole new level.

Survival endures many hardships and is usually everything from quite uncomfortable to just down right miserable. But you're alive. Hopefully.  Things can turn ugly in a matter of minutes in the woods.

Bushcraft is, as the word implies, a craft where primitive living skills coupled with enginuity and creative thinking, are practiced. It's fun to think outta-the-box and figure out how you're going to make a hanging rack with shelves inside your shelter so you can dry your clothes and your kindling.  It's a good feeling to know how to fashion a tool and use the natural resources to keep you alive and well in a dangerous situation.

"It's critical to understand principles, for instance; not every type of fire lay will work with every situation. The same with any tool in the tool belt."

We all know that we can't beat nature and that nature, in a heartbeat, can take us out. We can survive in it with a few skills, or we can make the wilderness into a place we call home. Home is living, and is what makes our experience not only comfortable, but can make a difficult situation actually enjoyable.

 Backpack/Bushcraft 101 Camp Clinic:

As with any one of our clinics, we can book a private clinic and

customize your journey to fit your needs.

No other experience necessary.

Requirements:

You have to be able to carry your own gear, water and food. (We will be processing water for safe consumption).

You will have to provide your own shelter and sleep system.

You will have preference on type of shelter you will use or make, i.e., tent, hammock, tarp, debris and natural resource shelters.

Ages 15 and up.

What You Will Learn:

In this clinic, we will expand on the skill sets laid out in "Boondocking" and explore the "other options" in a deeper

and connected way.

Additional skills presented in the 4 night plus courses.  Note: Presented in the order below and pursuant to the length of the journey.  A full emersion is 8-10 nights.

  • Navigation without instruments.
  • Making torches, lanterns and other night time light devices.
  • Orienteering: map reading, triangulation, shooting a bearing and reverse azimuth, migrating from bearing,
  • signaling, working with pace beads, creating a map.
  • Tracking, erasing your trail and leaving a trail for a comrade both obvious and incognito.

Throughout this course, many types of disaster and survival scenarios may be presented. There will be individual camp challenges at any time that will put your new found skills along with your creative thinking to task. You will be able to reason through the situation and provide for yourself what you will need to survive that scenario. Once completed, as a group, we will assess each camp and discuss it's pros and cons. We will assess the survival needs that were met, and how to handle the one's that weren't, with the resources available in the area.

Remember this one from Foundations? Shelter, Fire, Water, Food : In that order, usually.

In desert situations, hydration becomes the priority.
